During ancient times, when a woman was about to give birth, a midwife was summoned in order to support her through labor and delivery. There were no doctors yet, and midwives dominated the labor and delivery world.
In the recent time, midwives are person who can help with pre-pregnancy care, helping women to plan for having a child and helping women who are with child to look after the child properly. This generally includes nutritional and dietary support. During the pregnancy, midwives help with everything from emotional and physical support to actually supporting the birth of the child. Midwives work toward a safe pregnancy, and sometimes as a breathing coach. Post pregnancy, midwives provide emotional support as well as any medication that may be needed due to complications from the pregnancy.
Midwife training includes more than just the knowledge of how a woman’s body works. If a woman want to be a good midwife, she must have an innate passion to help women undergoing the different phases of pregnancy. The training of a midwife encompasses a holistic kind of formation and not just a shallow kind of preparation for what is to come.
Midwife training also helps midwives to be aware of their own general practice, as today’s midwives provide primary care, gynecological care, and menopausal care. Midwives are expected to supply exams that include pelvic exams. They could make principal care calls and will help women with menopause signs and symptoms. Midwives can advise medication, but their most work is to supply emotional and physical support which does not require the use of medicines.
The education for becoming a midwife begins in senior high school, as specific courses are recommended. People in high school should consider general health and science classes in addition to courses in sociology and psychology.
